An Apology.... and exciting changes ahead!

I'm fully recovered from my bout with H1N1... and I apologize for the delays in getting us back up-to-speed since.  We're now making changes  that will allow other volunteers to fill-in!

We're moving to a different software package that brings NEW features such as MOBILE-friendly access and news feeds to let you know when there are updates ... but at the same time, it will make it easier to allow more volunteers to contribute to the website!

As - always, we need volunteers who are willing to help with the site & help test the changes!  Contact Pokey or Jill (308) 635-3807  if you'd like to help!

Loss of our friend, Mary
Jan 30, 2010

On January 30, longtime friend & volunteer Marilyn (Mary) Thorsen of Torrington passed away.  Mary took part in fundraising, hospitality and other Calico events until her health made attending the events difficult over the past couple of years.  She was mother to fellow volunteer Bill M who said she was at-peace and "ready for the next part of her journey."    Her unique cheer & enthusiasm will be missed.

World AIDS Day 2009
Dec 1, 2009

Nearly 100 attended this year's World AIDS Day Memorial, which consisted of art show & dinner, and then a multi-media presentation remembering those we've lost over the years.  Live entertainment was provided by local group Yes, Ma'm, whom you may remember from the AIDS Walk in September.

Pictured are some of the volunteers who helped make this year's event possible!

2009 AIDS Walk
Sept. 19 @ 1pm

Money is still trickling in, but we are right at the $7,000 mark for this year's walk.   Jill reported we had 90 adults and 35 children present at this year's walk.  Approximately 60 door prizes were given to the walkers!

Please visit the walk page and be sure to spend your $$$ with retailers who give back to our community!

The next quarterly clinic will be October 13 & 14.   Please contact Janet to arrange your blood draw or Jill if you need a particular day or time.

Activists needed....
Aug, Sept 09

There are now 69 people waiting for life-saving medications to treat HIV.  Although the number of people with HIV continues to grow, the funding for ADAP (prescription drugs) has not.

Please call or write your senator & congressman to let them know our friends need their help.

Loss of our friend, Gilbert....
06/19/09

Words cannot express my shock or sorrow in hearing that long-time friend and community member Gilbert Rivera passed away Friday morning during a seizure.

Gilbert was 32 and graduated SBHS 1995.  He leaves behind family, many friends, and a longtime partner who loved him, and will miss him very much.

Our gatherings just won't be the same without his offbeat comments and humor.

His funeral will be Wed. June 24th at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 1102 12th Ave Scottsbluff.

Panhandle AIDS Walk 2008
Sunday, September 14  2008

We had a record turn-out this year as almost 180 panhandle residents  helped us raise  $8,500!   We had over 40 great prizes from local merchants to give away to participants.

pic 060.jpg (65140 bytes)We'd like to thank the Oregon Trail Pageant Winners for the entertainment and assistance... and to Don Randolph for traveling from Council Bluffs to attend and accept the honor of being our walk ambassador!

Thank everyone who attended as we couldn't do it without you... Our walk continues to be fun & successful -- even in a year that was difficult for many.

To our volunteers.... you were AWESOME!   The love, cheer and happiness in your giving was felt by all.  (and I personally enjoyed how the teens made a competition of  -and had fun- putting away the tables & chairs!  heh heh  I assure you, we can't get them to do that at home).

So again, our most sincere Thanks!

It's better to know....
We now spend more time dating and have more sex partners before marriage than ever before.  This significantly increases the risk of exposure to HIV through our sex partners' past. New medicines mean that people with HIV are living longer, healthier, more sexually active lives which makes early detection more important than ever.

New studies show that early diagnosis and treatment significantly lower the risk of transmission and long-term complications.

We have a new discrete location in Scottsbluff where you can discretely & anonymously get a free oral HIV test and know your status in about 30 minutes!  Please contact Jill Young (308-635-3807) or Janet Soule (308-632-2540) for your free, anonymous HIV test today.  Click here for more information on testing outside the Scottsbluff area.

Mary S. (one of our Wyoming volunteers) has a new man in her life...

(a few words from the doting granny....)

Greetings to all from the far southeast corner of Wyoming & Nebraska panhandle;

This is the new man in life and I have fallen head over heels for this little man . His name is: Grant Edric Elijah P. he was born Jan. 2008 , a little over 2 feet tall now. Grant has officially wrapped his grandma around his finger and his heart. I am so blessed to have lived this long to see him born and to grow. As you can see he will probably be a husker fan, wont have a choice due to the fact it has been passed down in the Gene Pool form his dad and grandfathers on both sides.

Wishes for great health to all,   MARY S.

World AIDS Day 2007 - Candlelight Memorial
On World AIDS Day, Calico Spirit hosted a candlelight memorial service.  This year, Calico Spirit awards were given to Dorothy Johnson and Joyce Asmus in recognition of all they continue to do for those impacted by HIV in our area.  Joyce and Dorothy provide snacks at the quarterly clinic and Calico Spirit events and are among the most active volunteers in our area!  (Oh, and make the best cookies!)

Jill Young was also given a Calico Spirit Award as she is one of the best caseworkers and patient advocates in the nation.  Jill takes responsibility for each patient and provides them with individual care and assistance and often puts more effort into the patients' healthcare than the patient would be willing to him/herself.

About 50 people braved the icy roads and bitter cold to attend this year's event... but those who attended enjoyed Deane Linde's new slideshow presentation.  This year's focus was on women & family caregivers.

Panhandle AIDS Walk 2007 a success!

Calico Spirit would like to thank Ms. Nebraska (Ashley Bauer), all our volunteers, and local merchants for helping us make our goal this year!

We had 165 registered walkers and raised over $7,500!  Calico Spirit will use this money for HIV prevention, education, and outreach activities.  View pictures or read more about this year's event.
